As per any large city, Hsinchu and Jhubei have most amenities. Hsinchu is an industrial town and gives you a taste of typical Taiwanese life. Jhubei is an upmarket part of town and is very comfortable for expats to live in.

You can also enroll at the universities (Tsing Hua and Chiao Tung) to study in a larger class environment. Prices start at 7000 nt for a semester depending on how many days you wish to study.

Transport
There is only limited public transport around the cities. The following are useful to know:
Getting from Hsinchu to the High Speed Rail (HSR):
- There is a train from Hsinchu Station to the HSR. It takes about 20 mins. You need to go to Liujia station (it is right next to the HSR. Cost 16nt one way.
Note that Jhubei station and the HSR station are not the same place and about 20 mins drive apart.
- There is a bus that goes from the Mos Burger on Zhongzheng Road. It goes past the universities on Guangfu Road before getting to the HSR. It takes about 30 mins and costs 15 nt each way.
Getting from Jhubei to the HSR:
- There is a free bus from Jhubei train station to the HSR. It takes about 20-30 mins
Nanliao beach:
- bus number 15 goes from outside SOGO to the port/beach area of Nanliao. It takes about 30-45 mins. cost 15 nt each way.
Lion's Head Mountain or Emei Lake:
- a bus goes from outside the Jhubei train station, Sheraton hotel or HSR station. It costs 100 nt return and
takes over an hour. Note that the bus comes back before 6pm.
Jhudong and the universities on Guangfu Road:
- bus number 1. It costs 15 nt each way
Neiwan:
- Take the train from Hsinchu to Neiwan.
Taxis
- Yellow taxis can be picked up from the street and they are metered. They tend to be more expensive than
private firms. Some speak English but most don't. A yellow taxi from Hsinchu to Jhubei will cost about 260 - 300 nt depending on where you are going. You can call 0800-024-111 to get one. You don't need Chinese to use
this.
- Black taxis are private firms and tend to be cheaper. You cannot pick them up on the street. They need to be pre-booked. You can do this about 10 mins before you need to be anywhere. Some drivers speak English but most don't. This number is a good firm (03) 535 2200 for Hsinchu or (03) 558 8088 for Jhubei. Jhubei to Hsinchu is usually around 200 nt.
- You can also use the Ibon machines in any 7-11, Family Mart, Hi Life etc to request a yellow taxi to come to your
location. Ask a member of staff to show you.
